On Friday morning we got up and headed towards Ground Zero. Mark had a rehearsal so Richard, Roselyn, Cal, and I went together. We took the subway down there and walked around the whole thing. It takes up about 16 acres.
This flag was hanging on the fence to St. John's Cathedral which is directly across the street from Ground Zero.
This is the cemetary there at St. John's. It's amazing that the church and stuff wasn't damaged when the twin towers fell.
This is Freedom Tower that they are building there at Ground Zero.
A view through the fence at all of the construction.
Across another street is the mural on the side of a fire station.
You can see where people left flowers and things. (*This is the day after Obama was there, due to the killing of Osama Bin Laden.)
A plaque commemorating those heroes of 911.
This poster hung on the wall of the fire station showing all of the fire department people who were first responders at the sight.
A view of the front of the fire station that is across the street from Ground Zero.
Then we went inside the Preview Memorial. The wall behind Richard and Calloway was full of some of the Missing Persons Posters that were placed near the twin towers in the days that followed.
A piece of an airplane window that was found in the rubble.
This is the basket that rescuers used to carry survivors out.
The stairwell to the basement was full of paper crain chains.
This is a picture showing what the new memorial should like when it is finished for the dedication in September 2012.
When we left Ground Zero we went to the Scholastic store, which by the way, is a teacher's dream come true! Walls, floor to ceiling, covered in nothing but children's books....sorry, no adult books here! Calloway loved this little dinosaur and wanted to have her picture made by it.
NYC Day 2 - Part 2 will continue with Friday afternoon's jaunt through Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History (featured in the movies "Night at the Museum"), and more Times Square.
Stay Tuned!
